Barcelona 2012

Just before Easter 35 students accompanied by 5 teachers spent 4 fantastic days in Barcelona visiting amazing sites such as the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi houses, Barcelona Aquarium and Nou Camp Stadium. No trip would be complete without a little retail therapy La Ramblas of course. Our final day was spent at enjoying the rides at Port Aventura in beautiful sunshine.

An unforgettable trip soon to be repeated!

Sowing the Seed

At times we are so focused on ourselves that it is easy to forget that we share our world with not only other people, but other creatures. Some of these we like and others we may not, but they all have an important role in our environment (even if it is only providing lunch for someone bigger). ‘Sowing the Seed’ was an event to encourage young people to start considering some parts of the environment that we may neglect or not even be aware of. For sixty pupils it was an opportunity to get up close to nature.

On Tuesday 8th May a selection of pupils from year 8 joined by eco-club members walked the short distance from school to the Alderman Tommy Patton Memorial Park. Each group, led by students from years 13 and 14 had a variety of activities to engage in.

With a licenced bird ringer on the sitepupils had the opportunity to come face to face with wild birds normally only seen from a distance. Close up, some of the plumage colours were spectacular. Birds were caught in the park, measured, weighed, ringed and then released. We had robins, starlings, great tits, blue tits, dunnocks and even black caps from Africa.

We also built hotels, for mini-beasts. Hopefully there will soon be many little beasties visiting our hotels and making it their new home. The only problem is that some of our residents might eat some of the other residents. We hope to attract spiders, beetles ants shrews and many other creepy crawlies.

With ‘Sowing the Seed’ as our title, there was obviously an opportunity for planting. Many wild flowers have now been planted in the park and we hope they will grow and thrive so they can be enjoyed by insects and humans alike in years to come.

Many great works of art based on nature were created by our pupils. Much of the art was based on wild plants and even weeds found growing in the park. One surprise of the day was the enthusiasm of the litter pick up squads. What a cracking job they did in making the park a more pleasant environment.

We can now expect more birds in the park attracted by the feeding stations set up in the trees and with the bird and bat boxes we made there may even be babies in the future!

We would like to thank Lynne McCreery and her team from Belfast City Council for providing a fun and educational experience for us all.
